Probably the worst news I've heard in a long time. Previously, we reported that rumors were floating about of an massively multiplayer online Animal Crossing for the Wii. Today, that rumor seems to have been squashed. In an interview from Gamespot UK, Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, when asked about whether Nintendo would consider creating an online avatar system, similar to Sony's "Home", he had this to say:
"In that respect, the virtual-world services out there now still aren't at a place where we'd like to join in--and certainly not to the point that we'd want to jump into competition with everybody else. We'd rather focus on doing things that nobody else would do."
Sounds like he thinks that Nintendo isn't ready to venture out into an MMO-style game. While he doesn't directly say that the next Animal Crossing isn't an MMO, that's sort of what he's hinting at. I still hold onto my hopes and dreams that we will have an awesome MMO Animal Crossing.
